About Me

Thank you for visiting the website and your interest in my work.

I've specialized in large format architectural photography since the 1990's and over that time, I've had the fortune to cover some great projects and work with some of the most celebrated architects and publications from both sides of the Atlantic.

This site was created as a venue dedicated to high quality fine art prints from a limited selection of my images. Please take your time, have a look and enjoy the photographs.

My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence and know that we stand behind the quality.

Kind regards, John Linden

Inspiration

Inspiration comes to us in many ways, it also seems to change over time like music. While the photographers who've inspired me deeply have remained steady and include Edward Curtis, Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Irving Penn, Robert Mapplethorpe, Ezra Stoller and Richard Bryant. Large format photography and architecture was where I wanted to go with my work from early on. The visual language of light, texture, depth and geometry, come together in an expressive way which connects all of us and I continue to enjoy exploring.

Techniques

I worked exclusively with large format 4x5 monorail film cameras for 15 years, from 1990 through 2005. All the images on the site from this period were created with this type of camera and large format film. In 2005 I switched to medium-format digital backs made by Phase One and a newer monorail camera designed by Arca Swiss, which is the setup I still mainly use today. I've upgraded the digital backs many times since then, but the combination of a monorail camera and a medium format digital back gives me what I feel is the best of both worlds. The monorail camera is relatively large and requires a tripod, but it's also a very intuitive and tactile tool to compose with. Phase One digital backs are very robust and give me files of the highest dynamic range and image quality possible, perfect for high quality prints.

career highlights

I was raised in Goleta, California and after traveling in my early 20's, I found myself studying photography at a small photographic institute in Cambridge, England. It was there I began to specialize in large format film photography and darkroom printing, while also assisting a talented local architectural photographer, Timothy Soar. After graduating, I moved to London where my work was quickly accepted by the architectural community. I was based in London and worked in Europe for 8 years before returning home to California, where I continue to specialize in architectural photography. My photographs have been published in numerous magazines over the years and over 80 books. I continue to enjoy the creative process and I appreciate the experiences and great people I've met along the way.
